Ear cropping is a painful and illegal mutilation.听

It is illegal to perform ear cropping in UK and thanks to our campaigning, it is also now illegal to sell or import ear-cropped dogs, and to send dogs abroad to be cropped.

What鈥檚 the issue with ear cropping?听

Ear cropping is illegal in the UK and an unnecessary, painful mutilation with no welfare benefit. The practice involves cutting off part of the ear flap, often without anaesthesia or pain relief.

Vets and animal welfare organisations are increasingly seeing cases of dogs with cropped ears. This worrying trend was rife on social media too, with celebrities and influencers sharing images of their ear-cropped dogs.听

The law has now been changed, sending a clear message that cropping dogs' ears is not ok and ending the trend of ear-cropped dogs for good.

How can you get involved?

Veterinary professionals can report cases:

  • England and Wales:听You can report to your Local Authority Animal Health Function 鈥� either Trading Standards or Environmental Health Services. Find out how to contact your local authority via a pre-agreed number. Find a听听or call听on 03454 04 05 06, who will refer you directly to the relevant local authority.
  • Scotland: You can report your concerns via the听 or by reporting to SSPCA鈥檚 confidential animal helpline at 03000 999 999.
  • Northern Ireland:听You can report to your听.

Members of the public can report cases of ear cropping:

  • England and Wales (call the RSPCA at 0300 1234 999)
  • Scotland (call the Scottish SPCA at 0300 0999 999)
