New data reveals vets back competition watchdog’s call for veterinary reform.
As the Competition and Markets Authority (CMA) urges Government toprioritisereformof theVeterinary Surgeons Act(VSA)following its investigation into vet services for household pets, new data from theȤҹapp(Ȥҹapp) reveals that 9 out of 10 vets (89 percent)agreewith the competition watchdog, thatvet practicesshould be regulated.
The datafromȤҹapp’s Voice of the Veterinary Profession surveyfound thatvets working in companion animal practice, thetypeof vet business the CMA’sinvestigation is focused on,felt particularly strongly thatvet practicesshould beregulated, with 89 percent backing the move.
Under existing veterinary legislation, whichdates back to1966, only individual vets and registered vet nurses(RVNs)are regulated. Thismeansthat veterinary businesses, which are mostly owned and run by non-vets,arenotheld accountablefordecisionswhich couldimpactanimal health and welfare. In its provisionaldecision report published last month, the CMA found this gap in regulation needed addressing urgently to ‘make sure petowners’interests are protected’.
