What inspired you to pursue a career in veterinary medicine?

When visiting my family in Somalia, I realised how important and interwoven farming and agriculture were in the lives of those around me. Seeing them so dedicated towards the wellbeing of their livestock was admirable and inspired me to follow a similar path. Also, with little representation for black and muslim people in the veterinary profession, I needed to be the change I wanted to see.

What has been the best part of your career so far?

My favourite part of Veterinary so far is that I am constantly finding new animals and specialities that interest me. It makes me excited for the future, as I don't feel pigeonholed into one niche and I can see myself continually evolving into a more skilled and knowledgeable vet. I also plan to volunteer back home and help my community provide better care to the animals around us after seeing the effects of droughts, climate change and preventable diseases devastate many.

And what have been the biggest challenges?

My biggest challenge would have been my transfer to a new university for veterinary. Starting anew was daunting, but I am always grateful that I made that decision. It has made me no longer worry about big changes in life, and I no longer feel obliged to stay somewhere where I don’t truly feel happy.

What advice would you offer to someone starting in the veterinary profession today?

If I were to give someone starting in the veterinary profession advice, I'd say that there is no room you don't deserve to be in. Have trust in the capabilities that got you this far and know that no opportunity is out of your reach until you try. I would also say to always seek support, whether that's from friends, your university, or, in my case, IVC Evidensia (@lifeativc), who have supported me throughout my veterinary career so far with their Ethnic Diversity Scheme and have shown me how much representation matters.
